Lionel Messi has admitted his shock at Fabio Capello’s decision to leave Theo Walcott at home for the World Cup finals.
Messi’s shock mainly comes from when he saw the impact Walcott had on the Champions League game between Barcelona and Arsenal.
“I must say that at the time, I thought it was a bad decision to leave Theo Walcott at home,” Messi told the Daily Star newspaper.
“And I think that has been proved right. I can only speak from experience but he was one of the most dangerous players I have ever played against. Barcelona players are not scared easily but I can tell you that when we played Arsenal last season he truly worried us.”
“When we were playing Arsenal at the Emirates we were so in control of the game at 2-0, with all respect Arsenal were not even in the game. Then Theo came on and changed the game. He pretty much single-handedly salvaged a draw against Barcelona that night.”
“Even in the return leg our manager Pep Guardiola was telling us he was the player to watch out for. And the best players in the world like Xavi and Gerard Pique were telling us to watch out for him. The truth is that he really rattled him.”

Diego Maradona never considered leaving Lionel Messi out of the team for the quarter-final World Cup game against Germany.
Messi hasn’t taken part in full training leading up to the game after suffering from flu-like symptoms. He did however participate in Friday’s practice session and Maradona has no concerns over Messi’s fitness.
“He did feel a bit under the weather, had a slight fever. He told me about it and I sent him back inside. It was very cold when we started training at 4:30pm. I gave him a bit of a rest.” Said Maradona.
“The session went well, but I never considered him not playing in this game. I just let him have a rest so he could play against Germany.”

Messi’s Argentine international team mate Diego Milito has said it is “laughable” to compare Wayne Rooney to Lionel Messi.
“When we hear the English or anybody else in the world of football trying to compare Wayne Rooney with Messi, we find it laughable. Rooney is a very good player there is no doubt about that – but to put him on the same level as Messi is wrong. It’s not up for debate, it’s just wrong.”
“We are looking at a player in Messi who, when he retires, may very well be the best player to have graced the game. How can he be compared to anyone currently playing, let alone a player who has never ever won World Player of the Year? While I don’t agree with it, I can understand Messi being compared to Kaka and Ronaldo, but Rooney? No, no, no.”

Lionel Messi believes it’s only “a question of time” before he scores at the World Cup.
He has failed to score in the group stages but has forced some very good saves out of the Greek and Nigerian goalkeepers, who had to be on form to keep out some top-corner bound strikes.
“I know I haven’t scored but I’m not bothered about that. Obviously I’d like to get a goal but it’s only a question of time before it comes.”
“The way Greece played made it tough for us. All they did was defend. Luckily we managed to impose ourselves again and we got another win, and that’s what matters.”

Argentina legend and coach, Diego Maradona, has said he will make necessary changes to the tactics of Argentina if it means Lionel Messi gets the chance to shine.
“If I had to change for his good, I’d change.” Speaking to radio station, Cooperativa.
“But I think with the system we have and the players we have all he nees is to explode, and surely he will do that at the World Cup.”
He also mentioned an emotional conversation he had with Lionel Messi, stating “I saw a Messi totally convinced of what he wants. We believe in him to the death. He’s not Leo any more, he’s Messi. He has the rights he’s earned on the pitch and he’ll have to make his leadership felt on it.”

Lionel Messi believes that people comparing him to the greats of the sport should stop, because he believes to be classed as one you need to win the World Cup.
“To become a legend, to be great, you also have to win a World Cup. I have only just turned 22, it’s all happening very quickly and you have to stay calm.” He said, “I never intend to disrespect anyone. I just play football, in my own way.”
His manager and Barcelona coach, Pep Guardiola, said “The comparison with the four best players of all time can only be made when he retires. For my generation, Maradona is the greatest that we have seen and I don’t think that will change.”
